A pleasure dining with @laurenceferaud of Domaine Pegau last night, sharing her wisdom over bottles of her very own Da Capo and other New World syrah. The 15 Da Capo was particularly memorable showing such elegance and an ethereal quality. Out of the other syrahs; the 87 and 88 Grange pair were lovely, while the 02 Colgin showed superb balance.

An honour to host a dinner for Laurence @laurenceferaud before she left HK last night. I met Laurence last April in her Domaine Pegau. Her 15 Da Capo has left a strong impression for me when I visited. Last night, we threw a “Non-French Syrah” theme along with 3 vintages of Da Capo.
87 Penfolds Grange- Sandalwood, cedar and mature black fruit. Soft and inviting but it dropped after 90 mins
88 Penfolds Grange- From an owc, solid backbone with vibrant acidity. More structured and layered. Laurence’s favourite in this Penfolds trio. Her all-time favourite Grange vintage is 1972.
01 Penfolds Grange- Intoxicating nose with vanilla, oak, violets, and cedarwood. Lots of Asian spice on the palate. Ethereal mouthfeel. My favourite in this trio.
07 Henschke Hill of Grace- A massive nose of black currants and oak but subtle and silky on the palate. Obviously young but already delicious. Quite a contrast between the nose and palate.
11 Sine Qua Non Patine Syrah- Lush and sexy with white chocolate, vanilla and black currants. Extracted but not overwhelming. Laurence also loves Manfred’s wine.
02 Colgin Syrah- Drinking beautifully. Lots of underlying spice, vanilla oak, herbs and dark berry fruit. Balanced.
17 Pegau Blanc A Tempo- Production size is less than 2000 bottles. Fresh with tropical fruit and minerals. Particularly subtle and balanced for a Rhone blanc.
98 Da Capo- Laurence’s first vintage. Port like nose with raisins, plums, earth and iron. While it was a few taster’s favourite Da Capo tonight, the wine was showing signs of decline in my humble view.
00 Da Capo- Although it is only two years apart, it showed a very different profile than the 98. It was a more classic expression of cdp with herbs, kirsch and sweet black fruit. Good mid-palate attack. Much fresher than 98.
15 Da Capo- Double decanted at 1pm and started serving at 830pm. Laurence said the ‘15 resembles the ‘10 a lot. The wine was very elegant and silky with underlying pepper and violets. Ethereal and transperent. It was a few tasters’ WOTN. It will be a knockout bottle when it is fully mature.
