I struggle with Rauschenberg’s work because I deeply admire and am inspired by his use of everyday and discarded objects in his work while at the same time, the work itself doesn’t speak to me. It seems devoid of true feeling or beauty, with a few noticeable exceptions, like his famous combine with a goat and tire and these lovely collages made from used garments. He and I share a common struggle, I believe: stopping short, not going far enough with the work and wrestling with all the elements until the encounter is complete; capitulating prematurely. Success requires that as artists we drop all fear of failure. Welcome failure. Success and true creative joy are on the other side. #Rauschenberg#artcomment

Robert Rauschenberg. “Currents” (1970). LACMA. These parts are from a 60 foot screen print of collages newspaper clippings from January and February 1970. The headlines cover the social and political events that defined the time—Vietnam, the Cold War, race relations, and environmental issues. Of the work, Rauschenberg said: “I want to shake people awake. I want people to look at the material and react to it. I want to make them aware of individual responsibility. I made “Currents” in the most direct way I knew how, because, knowing that it was art, people had to take a second look, at least, at the facts they were wrapping their garbage in.”
