Two models from my Civilian range, both facades less than three inches (9cm) in depth. C6 Inn Facade and C4 Thatched farm facade.
These models show the distinctive 'Half timbered ' style of architecture where a structural frame was built from rough hewn square section oak beams.
The spaces between the beams were filled with wattle and daub and later brick.
These walls were rendered in plaster and whitewashed and the oak frame was left exposed in between. The English Oak was particularly suited to this type of building due to its strength and durability.
The oak timbers became black with age and the buildings took on a distinctive black and white colouring.
The plasterwork was sometimes embellished outside and inside with decorations made from lime putty such as animals floral motifs or family crests,
this type of work was known as Pargetting.
These buildings reached their popularity in Tudor times and this method of building became known as the Tudor style. It has been revived again and again as a building style or as a decorative motif, these later examples became known as "Mock Tudor
