“He remembers what the spiritual visionary, Wallace Black Elk, a Lakota said – man's scratching of the earth causes diseases like cancer. He meant the mining and drilling for coal, gas, oil, uranium. The scratching brings up the things deep in the earth that should have stayed down there.”

Ruins from the Golden Fleece Mine, outside Lake City, Colorado, 9,800 feet. By 1904 the mine had produced more than $1 million in silver and gold ore. It is also known for an unusual mineral, named hinsdalite (PbAl3(PO4)(SO4)(OH)6). The mine had an incredible impact around Lake City. As development and production increased, Lake City became a center of activity, where smelters and concentrating works were built. The area was generally inaccessible until 1889 when the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad built a branch to Lake City. Soon after the railroad arrived, very rich ore was found at the Golden Fleece Mine, with a single railroad car yielding $50,000.•••
